Zai ripped the silver chains off Lumi.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” sobbed the child-goddess. “Hurt me. Bad! Evil! Meanie hurt me!”

“With silver?” Zai asked. She glanced at the piece of Lumi. The azure songbird fluttered her little wings in the silver cage.

“Kya! Kyrii! Kya!”

“Yes!” sobbed Lumi. “Please, please! Hurts! Bad! He’s so bad and mean and dumb!”

“And he’s dying,” Zai said with a great deal of satisfaction. She never wanted to kill anyone again—she was done throwing knives into beings’ eyes—but that didn’t mean she couldn’t revel in an evil thing like the Great Apostate dying of whatever disease Bith’au had given him.

“Kya! Kya! Kya!” screeched the bird.

“I’m getting her free,” Zai said and unwound another chain from about Lumi’s body.

“Mapil,” a deep and angry voice chanted behind her, “smother the will and put to rest the mind.”

Purple light flared. Panic shot through Zai. She knew those words. What they meant. She whipped the chain in her hand as she turned and threw it at the old man standing behind her. The Great Apostate had a halo of purple dancing around his wrist.

He’s a priest of Mapil? Zai thought in shock as she threw the chain at him. I thought he served Bibori.

Her chain slammed into his mouth, cutting off his words. He stumbled back from the blow. The halo glowing about his wrist died. The gold fell to the floor, the thin wire snapping.

Spitting blood, he resumed his chant. “Mapil, smother the will and put to rest the mind! Mapil, smother—”

Zai ripped at the chains about Lumi, staring into the sobbing girl’s eyes. “I need you!”

“—the will and put to rest the mind! Mapil, smother the—”

Zai yanked off the last chain. Pressure squeezed down on her mind. The world spun around her. She battled against the pressure of Will squeezing about her thoughts. Her body grew numb. Remote. She leaned over Lumi, fighting.

“—will and put to rest the mind! Mapil, smother the will and—”

“Zai!” Lumi cried and threw her arms around Zai’s neck.
